Created as a homage to the legendary quilt makers of Gee’s Bend, AL and the lazy gal or bars quilt pattern common in their art. Inspired, in particular, by “Lazy Gal” Work Clothes by Annie Mae Young when on exhibit in Patterns in Abstraction: Black Quilts from the High’s Collection. Upon reading the title, I grumbled to myself “ain’t nothing lazy about women’s work.” A gift of long, wide strips of fabric and a night of insomnia birthed this quilt. The hand piecing, hand embroidery, and hand quilting underscore the invisible labor of women while challenging traditional definitions of productivity and “laziness.”
